Ingredients:

  • 2 cans (21 oz / 595g each) apple pie filling OR 6 cups (900g) peeled and sliced Granny Smith apples tossed with 1/4 cup (50g) brown sugar and 1 tsp (2.6g) cinnamon
  • 1 box (15.25 oz / 432g) yellow or white cake mix
  • 3/4 cup (170g) unsalted butter, melted

Instructions:

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C) and lightly grease a 9x13 inch baking dish.
  2. Pour the apple pie filling (or the fresh apple mixture with brown sugar and cinnamon) into the dish, spreading it evenly with a spatula.
  3. Sift the dry cake mix evenly over the top of the apples.
  4. Use a spoon to gently flatten the powder without stirring, maintaining a distinct boundary between the fruit and the mix.
  5. Drizzle the melted butter evenly across the top of the cake mix, ensuring no dry white patches of flour remain.
  6. Bake for 45–50 minutes, or until the edges are bubbling and the top has turned a deep mahogany-gold.
